 About Shoji Screens
These Custom-made
decorative screens
consist of wooden frames
with translucent
inserts. Although often
found instead of windows
in traditional Japanese
homes, where deep
overhangs protect the
screens, elsewhere
shojis are typically
used as treatments for
existing windows.
Rice paper is the
traditional insert, but
due to its weak nature,
it has been largely
supplemented by
fiberglass synskin,
which has a similar look
and texture and is also
very durable and
maintenance free. Wooden
frames can be stained or
painted with any color
to match your decor.
Shoji Screens can be
made to slide along a
wooden track or fold
over a window like
shutters. Several panels
can be hinged together
and stacked at one side
of the window. Shoji
Screens can be used for
doorways, replacement
for blinds or draperies
as well as windows. They
are also appropriate as
room dividers. The
screens are comparable
priced to custom wooden
shudders.
